The Golf Circle invites any Old Southendian (both Ladies and Men), who enjoys playing golf in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, whether having a low or high handicap, to join and take part in a number of Golf meetings each year.
There is also an OSGC Tour that is organised yearly in the first week in the month of June. The Tour involves 4 rounds of golf on the Monday - Thursday with 4 nights B & B. The Tour generally centres on a UK village/town/city within easy reach of up to 3 golf courses. Occasionally, the Tour visits Europe, with France being a firm favourite. The tour party arrives on the Sunday evening and, the last round on Thursday is a course on the way home so that members get back home in the early evening.
The OSGC generally selects courses that are in Essex, Suffolk, and Kent which are close to major routes such as the M25 and A12 on the basis that most of the members are located in or near these 3 counties and these major roads. There are exceptions to this such as Felixstowe Ferry GC, Clacton GC, and Frinton GC which are all on the Essex/Suffolk coastline and are firm favourites with the Society. We try to play different courses every year, cost and availability permitting.
The Society days will consist of either 18 or 27 holes of golf, with Coffee and Bacon rolls an hour or so before the 1st tee, 1 course lunch if we play 27 holes, and a 2 course dinner at the end when we hand out the numerous prizes.
Yearly membership is £30 - this provides the bulk of the prize fund.
Prizes consist of the various Trophies (to be kept for 1 year and inscribed at winners cost before return), bottles of wine, OSGC logo’d golf balls, plus assorted extras such a towels, inscribed glass etc if funds allow.
No one person can win more than 1 major prize at each meeting, with the exception of the Nearest the Pin (Par 3) / Nearest the Pin in 2/3 (Par 4/5) prizes. This ensures that we get multiple winners and runners up at each event!
Whilst there are 4 Society meetings, only 3 (Spring, Summer and Autumn) count towards the End of Season trophies: Player of The Year and Cock House [YES ! - we still battle hard to be Cock House]
The 4th meeting is a Bring A Friend (BAF) meeting (formerly Guest Day) with the same meeting format as previously but much less onus on paying for a Guest due to spiralling costs over the past few years. BAF is open to ALL OSGC members but if you want to bring a friend you can. If you do bring a friend then you will be paired with that friend, else I will pair you up with another member. ALL the meetings are great fun ... so please try and make as many as you can !!
